The City of Visalia is recruiting for Mechanic / Welder.
THE DIVISION:
The City of Visalia's Fleet Maintenance Division is part of the Public Works Department. The Fleet Maintenance Division provides everything needed to keep all City of Visalia owned vehicles and equipment operating at peak performance. The Division has a full-service repair facility that provides preventive maintenance and repair services, has a fully stocked parts department and manages the City of Visalia’s fueling contract and fueling sites.

THE POSITION:
The City of Visalia Fleet Maintenance Division is recruiting for a Welder\Mechanic. This is a journey level position assigned to perform a full range of skilled equipment maintenance, repair, and welding. Work in this class is distinguished by the greater complexity of the assignments received, the greater independence within which an incumbent is expected to operate, and the exercise of judgment and initiative in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents are expected to have advanced knowledge in heavy equipment or automotive/light equipment maintenance and repair as well as advanced skill and knowledge of welding manufacturing, fabricating, techniques and procedures.
Qualifications / Requirements
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, team player with the ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form and follow both written and oral direction. The ideal candidate will be well organized with advanced skill and knowledge of welding fabrication, manufacturing, welding techniques and vehicle \ equipment maintenance and repairs. They will have knowledge of both basic tools (Hand Tools) and specialized tools and equipment needed for the diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work with other staff members, be open to suggestions and work in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will also follow safe work practices, including workplace safety policies and procedures and adhere to all City of Visalia policies and procedures.
REQUIRMENTS:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- Two (2) years of experience as a journey-level welder and two (2) years journey-level experience as light and heavy equipment mechanic.
- Specialized training in all phases of welding including mig, tig, arc welding, oxygen-acetylene welding and brazing, silver soldering and soldering.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class B with air brake endorsement by time of appointment.
