Job Summary

LGBT Resource Center ( LGBT RC) empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic (LGBTQIA+) students to grow as leaders and learners by supporting students in navigating university systems, exploring their identities, finding community, and developing as leaders with a social justice lens. We are seeking a student intern who is creative, passionate about making inclusive community spaces, highly organized, and excited to plan events with the potential to make lasting change. The Gay-la Intern leads in planning our largest fundraiser of the year, which supports funding for our student programs and scholarships. This intern will play a pivotal role in creating an engaging, interactive, and impactful Gay-la and they will help us refresh what has been a signature event for LGBTQIA+ community at the U for over a decade.

This paid internship is part-time (10 hours per week) and temporary, lasting January 2024 to June 2024. The intern reports to the Director. There is potential to extend the internship for the 2025 Gay-la for the right candidate.

Responsibilities
  1. Under the direct supervision of the Director, plan and coordinate the annual LGBT RC Gay-la, to be held in Spring Semester 2024 (3/30/24).
  2. Working closely with the Director, manage logistics of event planning, including space reservations, catering, equipment rental, ticketing and table assignments, requesting donations from businesses, space layout to enhance accessibility and interactivity, etc.
  3. Work closely with vendors outside of the university to ensure critical planning deadlines are met and that the necessary items and services are reserved.
  4. Brainstorm with LGBT RC staff and partners ideas for entertainment and engagement.
  5. Book local talent to perform at the Gay-la.
  6. Work with Student Affairs Marketing and Communications to inform the marketing campaign for the Gay-la. Assist in email campaigns and other marketing if needed.
  7. Outreach to campus and community partners to ask for their support of the Gay-la.
  8. Manage and train volunteers to perform essential Gay-la tasks.
  9. Attend weekly staff meetings and regular one-one-one supervision meetings.
  10. Assist with general office duties, such as answering phones and greeting guests, if needed on an occasional basis.
  11. Maintain internal databases of records, contracts, photos, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled student at the University of Utah, either undergraduate or graduate. Must be available to work 10 hours a week from January 2024 to June 2024. This includes academic breaks (summer, fall, etc.), as well as occasional evening and weekend work.
  • A highly organized, self-motivated worker who can stay on task and meet deadlines with moderate supervision.
  • An excellent communicator who will represent the LGBT RC in email, phone, video, and in-person outreaches with campus and community partners.
  • The right candidate will be excited to work with people and enjoy working as part of a team. This position is community-centered and requires someone with skills for collaborating with LGBT RC staff, volunteers, and partners.
  • A creative problem solver who can effectively work with LGBT RC staff to determine how to reimagine the Gay-la in a new format while maintaining what our community has loved about the Gay-la. This includes ideas for virtual events/engagement.
  • Must demonstrate enthusiasm for learning about LGBTQIA+ identities and working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Training for essential office programs and tools will be provided. Skills related website editing, video and audio editing, graphic design, and/or Abode Create Suite proficiency are a benefit, but not required.8.Experience in event planning preferred.
  • Experience with customer service or fundraising is a plus.
  • This position is work -study eligible. However, it is open to all students, regardless of work-study status. Preference will be given to work-study eligible students.
